Berlin is the first German venue for an ISU international competition in synchro. The German Skating Union (DEU), together with the Berlin Ice Sport Federation launched and organized this competition. The premiere in January 2005 was a huge success. Several thousands of enthusiastic visitors watched performances of many of the top world teams in a sold-out Erika Hess ice rink.
21 teams with approximately 500 athletes and 1,000 skaters from 12 nations showed synchronized skating at its highest level. Teams from Sweden, Finland, USA, Canada, Russia, Switzerland, Italy, Czech Republic, France, Croatia, Poland and, of course, from Germany responded to the invitation of Team Berlin 1 and travelled to Berlin for the competition.
The second year of the Cup of Berlin held even more attention. Over 7,000 visitors enjoyed a great competition with a thrilling “goosebump” factor. The stadium was a full house, and all international teams received standing ovations. For the second time the Rockettes from Finland won the Cup of Berlin. Seven nations and a total of 21 teams were heartily welcomed at the Erika Hess stadium. 12 junior teams for Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic opened the competition for a first-class audience. Nine teams in the senior class brought the hall to a boil. Teams from Finland with the vice world champion Rockettes, USA, Canada, Switzerland and the Czech Republic in Berlin, gave it their all.
After a break in the competition in 2007, the Cup of Berlin was held again in January 2008 and 2010. Organized with the help of the Ice Skating Union and the Berlin Ice Sports Federation the competition once again far exceeded expectations.
The new date was announcement of the International Skating Union for January 14 and 15, 2011.
